Exploring the Rich History of Round Rock, Texas

Round Rock, Texas is a city with a rich history that dates back to the late 1800s. The architecture of the older sections of the city is quite typical of its time, although there are several notable exceptions. Most of the buildings in the city center were built between 1876 and 1881, although several buildings have facades that date from later times. Round Rock is also fortunate to have a well-preserved house park that shows the progression of middle-class housing styles from the 1870s to the present.

The story of Round Rock began in 1876 when the Texas Land Company purchased 127.75 acres of the Wiley Harris extension from the International and Great Northern Railroad. This land was then subdivided and sold in lots on July 4th, coinciding with the nation's 100th anniversary. This was shortly followed by General Gordon Granger proclaiming the authority of the United States government and freeing all slaves in the state. The Missionary Baptist Church, built north of Old Round Rock, was one of the first churches in Round Rock and the county.

It offers quick access to many charming attractions in nearby Cedar Park and Round Rock, such as Old Settler's Park. Other local houses with a structure similar to the Palm House include the Old Stage Coach Inn, the Barker-Porter House and others in the neighborhood east of the city center. Central Texas has broken its historic record for days above 100 degrees, and much of the state is suffering from a drought officially classified as “exceptional”. Main Street in downtown Round Rock hosts events on the second and fourth Thursday of every month at 7 p.m., unless otherwise noted.

Austin is also nearby, being only 30 miles away and being famous for its hundreds of live music venues and some of its major music festivals.
